Photovoltaics claims a major role in the renewable energy portfolio, and is one of the fastest growing high-tech industries. Although the industrial focus is on silicon-based solar panels, novel approaches such as thin-film technologies based on CdTe have penetrated the market, and organic photovoltaics is becoming a mature technology. The   development of new, earth-abundant solar energy materials, and low-cost deposition and device fabrication processes are key to the advancement of this field. 

The symposium aims to combine recent advances in mature photovoltaics technologies with new developments in both second and third generation concepts. In particular, the symposium aims to focus on thin-film technologies including silicon, CdTe, CIGS, and inorganic earth-abundant materials such as kesterites, and emerging materials and designs such as nanomaterials, hybrid and organic materials, including hybrid perovskites, dye-sensitized solar cells, novel hybrid solar cell concepts and organic photovoltaics (OPV). This symposium will give an opportunity to engineers, professors, scientists, and students to interact on the key issues that will shape the growth of solar energy technologies. The technical program will include invited talks, contributed presentations and poster sessions.
