This symposium is focused on studies regarding the preparation, characterization, structure-property relationships with the biological response and applications of different materials, surfaces and interfaces for medical devices and health applications. Particular stress is emphasized on the elucidation of the relationship between the structure and the resulting physical, chemical, and biological properties. General areas of interest include, but are not restricted to: self- and directed molecular assemblies, membranes and vesicles, gels and networks, smart and self-healing systems, mineralization, hybrids and composites; improved metallic, ceramic or polymeric materials to increase their biological performances such as enhancing corrosion or degradation resistance in body fluids, improve their tissue integration or to prevent device-related infections; address the role of surfaces and interfaces in medical and health applications, bringing together scientists different backgrounds so as to foster a multidisciplinary picture.

Transversal works and researches crossing the boarders between these fields are particularly encouraged. Oral and poster sessions will include discussions on the frontier areas of development of new and functional materials, surfaces and interfaces for medical devices and health.

  • Surfaces and interfaces for biomaterials, drug/gene delivery, implants, patterning and processing, including plasma and laser-based technologies, dry coatings, biomimetic, tribological and others
  • Advanced techniques (electronic and ionic spectroscopy, high resolution scanning microscopy, atomic force microscopy) for surface and biointerface characterization and modelling
  • Surfaces and interfaces and their role toward the biological performances of biomaterials, including bio, hemo-compatibility
  • Smart materials and devices based on surface effects
  • Micro-fluidic and micro-reactors and their applications in biomaterials, including alternative-to-in-vivo testing, diagnostics, drug assessment and development
  • Cyto, muta, tera and genotoxicity issues and their relation to interfacial phenomena
  • Corrosion and Tribocorrosion of biomaterials in biological media
  • Biomaterials with antimicrobial properties.
