The synergistic combination of biology and materials provides a powerful paradigm for research in biomaterials, healthcare, food processing, and materials applications. The interplay between these two domains occurs in many fashions, ranging biomimetic materials through interfaced bionanosystems. Successful research in this domain requires effective understanding of chemistry, materials research, biology, and interfacial science, providing a fertile ground for cross-cutting interdisciplinary research
This symposium will focus on research at the interface between man-made and biological materials. We will focus in particular on the latest research emphasizing how synergy between man-made and synthetic materials can be game-changing in terms of structure and function. This symposium will cover new tools for bioconjugation, novel approaches to ‘cyborg’ synthetic/biological constructs, imaging and characterization of the bio-nano interface, and the application of these strategies to a broad range of applications.
- Biomimetic materials, including inorganic and polymeric nanoparticles, carbon dots, and biologically-derived nanoparticles
- Biomedical applications of bioconjugated nanomaterials
- Controlled interactions of biomolecules with nanomaterials for sensing and delivery
- Experimental and modeling studies of bio-nano interfaces
- Lipid rafts as model membranes
- Biomaterial mechanics
- Bionanomaterials in new food systems
