Transition metal oxides exhibit fascinating and complex physical behaviors (e.g. intertwined charge/orbital/spin states and unexpected electronic phase competition) and excellent chemical properties (e.g. superior photo/electrochemical catalytic activities and sensing capabilities), making them an extraordinary class of candidate materials for applications ranging information processing, to energy conversion/storage/harvesting, to environmental sensing technologies. Remarkable advances in material synthesis (e.g. rational control of dimension/morphology of versatile nanostructures, atomically precise construction of epitaxial thin films/heterostructures, and formation of new phases under extreme conditions) and rapid development on the multimodal characterization with high spatial/temporal/energy resolution (e.g. in situ x-ray/electron/neutron techniques) have made a paradigm shift for exploring, understanding, and designing structures and functionalities of oxide materials at a deeper level. In particular, to obtain a detailed picture of physical and chemical processes near physical boundaries with its environment, the complex nucleation and growth of nanostructures as well as various thin films, and exotic phenomena of epitaxial heterostructures have become thematic objectives in this field and can accelerate the implementation of multifunctional oxide materials in emergent applications.

This symposium will cover the most recent developments, applications and forefront challenges in synthesis, properties and characterization techniques for studying multifunctional oxide materials. Particular attention will be paid high throughout combinative investigations on smart synthesis of nanostructures and epitaxial heterostructures, phase transformations and competitions under extreme conditions, functional defects formation/migration/ordering, (electro-/photo-)chemical reactions, and interface dynamics in environmental conditions. The goal of this symposium is to provide an interactive forum for scientists various fields who study the structure-property relation of multifunctional oxides. Specific sessions will be organized in regard with the scientific theme topics rather than with the similarity of the synthesis or characterization techniques to benefit cross-fertilization. We hope this symposium would help the materials scientists on multifunctional oxides to understand and take advantage of smart synthesis and advanced characterization approaches to solve the needed problems in their fields.
