A5. Nano-engineered Coatings, Surfaces, and Interfaces

Today, various processes are used to fine tune the properties of the surfaces at the nanoscale. Controlling the chemical composition, microstructure, topography of surfaces and interfaces allows to enhance or bring new functionalities to the treated substrates. New applications are found in a wide variety of areas such as energy production and thermal management, optics, microelectronics, biology, healthcare, wear, heat, and corrosion protection.

In this respect, this symposium aims at bringing together academics and industrialists and to be a forum for providing an overview of the field of nano-engineered surfaces and interface where information and expertise on cutting-edge research and technology are disseminated.

Topics of interest are related to thin film materials self-organized at the nanoscale such as functional thin films, mutilayered systems, nanolaminates, and nanostructured coatings and surfaces. The symposium aims at giving insights on the structure - property relationships of nano-engineered surfaces and interfaces modified by ion- and plasma-based techniques such as i) Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition (PECVD) processes, even carried out at atmospheric pressure, and ii) Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) methods such as cathodic arc, ion-beam assisted deposition and implantation and plasma nitriding, hollow cathodes, magnetron sputtering, pulsed laser deposition, and all their variants. Both experimental and theoretical works will be considered.
